Act 3 — Africa

The birthplace of the bean.

Hazel had been moving fast. Bali. Sumatra. Central America. But Africa slowed her down. This is where coffee was born — and she could feel it in every cup. From the highlands of Uganda to the ancient forests of Ethiopia, Act 3 is where the journey gets serious.

Chapter 12 — Uganda

Uganda

Nobody puts Uganda first. Hazel did. She'd heard the highlands of Mount Elgon produced something special — clean, bright, surprisingly sweet. She found a small cooperative, sat with the farmers, and drank cup after cup until the sun went down. Dark chocolate. Red fruit. Brown sugar. She put Uganda first on her list from then on.

Roast: Medium  |  Flavor Notes: Dark chocolate, red fruit, brown sugar  |  Origin: Mount Elgon highlands

“She put Uganda first.”

Chapter 13 — Kenya

Kenya

Nairobi to the highlands. Hazel took the long way. She always takes the long way. Kenya AA — the grade, the standard, the benchmark. Bright acidity. Black currant. Citrus. A wine-like complexity that made her stop mid-sip and reconsider everything she thought she knew about coffee.

Roast: Medium  |  Flavor Notes: Black currant, citrus, wine-like  |  Origin: Kenyan highlands, AA grade

“Reconsider everything.”

Chapter 14 — Colombia

Colombia

Hazel took a detour to South America. The Andes. Coffee farms carved into the mountainside at altitudes that make your lungs work harder than expected. She didn't mind. The cup was worth it. Caramel. Hazelnut. Mild citrus. A smooth, balanced cup that somehow managed to be both exciting and completely comforting at the same time.

Roast: Medium  |  Flavor Notes: Caramel, hazelnut, mild citrus  |  Origin: Colombian Andes

“The cup was worth it.”

Chapter 15 — Brazil

Brazil Santos

The Cerrado savanna. Hazel sat at the edge of it as the sun dropped low and the light went golden. A jaguar sat down nearby. Neither of them moved for a while. The Brazil Santos was smooth, nutty, low acid — the kind of cup that doesn't demand anything from you. She understood why this is the world's most popular origin. The jaguar approved.

Roast: Medium  |  Flavor Notes: Smooth, nutty, low acid, chocolate  |  Origin: Cerrado, Brazil

“The jaguar approved.”

Chapter 16 — Decaf

Decaf Colombia

Hazel had a rule about decaf. She didn't drink it. Then she tried the Swiss Water Process Colombia and quietly revised the rule. All the flavor. None of the apology. Caramel. Chocolate. Smooth. She didn't announce the revision. She just ordered another cup.

Roast: Medium  |  Flavor Notes: Caramel, chocolate, smooth  |  Process: Swiss Water Decaf

“She quietly revised the rule.”

Chapter 17 — Ethiopia (Yirgacheffe)

Ethiopia Yirgacheffe

Hazel had been building to this. The birthplace of coffee. The Yirgacheffe region — where wild coffee trees still grow in ancient forests and the cup tastes like nothing else on earth. Blueberry. Jasmine. Lemon. She sat with it for a long time. This wasn't just coffee. This was the origin of everything.

Roast: Medium-Light  |  Flavor Notes: Blueberry, jasmine, lemon  |  Origin: Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia

“The origin of everything.”

Chapter 18 — Ethiopia (Sidama)

Ethiopia Sidama

She wasn't done with Ethiopia. The Sidama forest — ancient, dense, alive. Natural process. The cherries dried on raised beds in the highland sun. Stone fruit. Berry. A sweetness that felt earned. She sat in the forest and didn't want to leave. She stayed until the light was gone.

Roast: Medium  |  Flavor Notes: Stone fruit, berry, natural sweetness  |  Origin: Sidama, Ethiopia

“She stayed until the light was gone.”

Chapter 19 — Mumbai

Masala Chai

Hazel left the Sidama forest still emotional. She needed something different. Mumbai. A rickshaw driver named Ravi — one hand on the rickshaw, one hand on his chai, didn't spill a drop. She watched him and ordered the same thing. Cardamom. Ginger. Cinnamon. Clove. Black pepper. She called it her greatest achievement: finishing the cup without spilling a single drop in that rickshaw.

Type: Masala Chai  |  Flavor Notes: Cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, clove  |  Caffeine: Moderate

“Her greatest achievement.”
