The Capsule Question: How a Customer Made Me a Better Coffee Nerd

It started with a customer question.

Someone reached out and asked something I honestly hadn't thought deeply about: "Do your single serve capsules work in my Keurig® brewer?"

Simple question. Should've been a simple answer. But Beardo doesn't do simple when there's something worth learning — so I went digging.

What I found sent me down a rabbit hole I wasn't expecting. And by the end of it, I realized the answer wasn't just "yes, they're compatible" — it was so much bigger than that.

First, Let Me Catch You Up

If you read my last post, you already know I'm a little obsessed with freshness. Like, unreasonably obsessed. We talked about how grocery store coffee can sit on a shelf for four months or more before it ever reaches your cup — and how Beardo's roast-to-order model flips that entire script.

Roasted when you order it. On its way to your door within days. Not sitting in a warehouse waiting for someone to notice it.

That's the Beardo's difference. And I thought I'd made my point.

Then came the capsule question — and I realized the freshness conversation wasn't finished. Not even close.

What's Actually Inside a Single Serve Capsule?

Here's where it gets nerdy. Bear with me — this is worth it.

A single serve coffee capsule is actually a pretty impressive piece of engineering. Nitrogen-flushed, hermetically sealed, designed to keep coffee from going completely stale for months on a shelf. The technology is genuinely clever.

But here's the thing: the pod doesn't fix the problem. It just slows it down.

Mass-produced capsules are filled with coffee that was roasted weeks — sometimes months — before it ever hit the packaging line. Then it sat in a warehouse. Then it shipped to a distribution center. Then it landed on a grocery shelf. By the time it reaches your brewer, that coffee could be six months old or more.

The nitrogen seal preserves it. It doesn't save it.

Coffee is alive — chemically speaking. Right after roasting, beans release CO₂ and develop hundreds of flavor compounds. The window where coffee is at its absolute peak is measured in weeks, not months. After that, oxidation moves in and the complexity quietly disappears.

So when your capsule was roasted to order — like ours — you're brewing at the peak of that flavor window. Not somewhere near the end of it.

That one customer question just made the freshness argument even stronger than I thought it was.
